Doris Revisited

Nowadays I go to the library with books in mind. Or I go planning to pull an old favorite. Rarely do I end up checking out a book completely out of the blue. I did last week, and I could not have been more pleased with it.

First of all, the title caught my eye: The Thing About Jane Spring.
It was catchy and seemingly light-hearted--maybe even humorous, which is totally my thing. The cover was equally promising with it's jaunty colors, fun font, and little sparkles. But the book flap TOTALLY did it for me.

This book was about a rigid, outspoken, virtually charmless lady lawyer who was clueless as to why no man would date her more than once. After a couple bottles of wine one evening, coupled with a Doris Day marathon on TV, she figured it out: she needed to be more like Doris, because men like Cary Grant and Rock Hudson LOVE Doris. So she decided to reinvent herself as Doris Day, and as you can imagine, hilarious hijinks ensued.

Now I love Doris Day. I've always loved Doris Day. She's more everyday than Grace Kelly (whom I also adore), more grown up than Audrey Hepburn (ditto), and more relatable than Sophia Loren. For anyone who hasn't grinned their way through a Doris Day movie, I must say, you're just not letting her charm you. Give her another shot! And then read this book. Written by Sharon Krum, it is everything Doris is herself: sparkling, silly, flirty, sophisticated, and just plain fun.
