As I've been swamped with deadlines, committments, and things that simply needed to get done these past two weeks, a few things stick out in my mind.
Working at Gilly Hicks (the Sydney-based version of Abercrombie or Hollister) must be a study in embarrassment.
As I breezed in to pick out a Christmas gift for my niece, the girl at the door said to me, "Every girl wants some 'Down Undies' for Christmas." My dumbfounded response? "Okay." I won't even go into the almost nude male photos on the walls...
There is such a thing as too many desserts
NEVER would I have thought to admit such a thing, but it's true. My mom and I put together a lovely little dessert bar for my sister-in-law's baby shower, but honestly, we would all have likely been content with a big slice of chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. I know I would have. Moral: Some things are meant to be done by other people.
It's pretty hilarious to watch the transformation in people if you're the only one in the group not drinking. Tongues loosen, inhibitions slink off, and what's left is very funny indeed.
Laser tag is arguably the most fun you can have with your friends for $5. I recently played a round with friends--just moms, no kids, and it was AWESOME!! There's talk of challenging our husbands...
I'm thrilled to be surrounded by people who still think birthdays are important (even approaching 40) For some, it's more of a 'birth-week'. My mother-in-law told me last year that birthdays were for young people. Well, I'm not subscribing to that philosophy, and I don't ever plan to. If possible, I'll be laser-tagging it into my eighties. (I can totally see Betty White doing it...)
Jake Gyllenhaal is pretty cute. Just watched The Prince of Persia last night...
Having friends who understand you is priceless. Despite my c-r-a-z-y schedule I still made time to drive into Houston to see three of my favorite authors (Tasha Alexander, Deanna Raybourn, and Lauren Willig) discuss their books. It was so worth it, and it was clear that they are all friends and have tremendous respect for each others' work.
I miss the quiet solitude of writing. I'm anxious to get back to it.

Laser tag! I'm there.
And I must remember "Every girl wants some 'Down Undies' for Christmas." Though does that apply to pregnant women?
hahahahah down undies um wow
Nuh-uh! I do NOT believe you Alyssa! There's no such thing as too many desserts :)
oxoxoo
Denalee
Ah, this was a fun read. And if we ever meet, I'm glad to know you're a fellow laser tag fan!
Have't tried laser tag, might have to see if we have one here.
Never heard of down undies, must be missing something.
Can't imagine too much dessert. I can have two or three every day.
Love, love birthdays. That's the only day that's yours.
Jake was looking cute in Prince of Persia. I think it was the hair.
I can't make the call on this one, David. I will say this...I don't particularly want 'Down Undies' for Christmas, so it's possible your wife doesn't either.
Believe it, Denalee. In the right situation, it's overload. :)
Green Girl, before we can meet up for a laser tag duel, I'll need to improve my aim and amp up my strategy, because I have no doubt you'll bring it!
LaShaunda, 'Down Undies' are just undies, playing off 'Down Under' in an Australian store... And I'd definitely look up laser tag if I were you!! :)
Gilly Hicks?
I've never heard of them Downunder!
Notice in their store list there are NONE here in Oz.
Reminds me of cigarette ads in Germany for "the most popular smoke in Australia" a brand I'd never heard of!
That's pretty fascinating, Al...makes me wonder if the U.S. idea of Australia is completely divergent from the real thing.
I just saw Lauren Willig too! Only in Ann Arbor. Obviously. :)
