Jane Genre

I have to admit, I'm falling more and more under the spell of the exploding genre of Jane Austen spin-off novels. It's a little like being in a secret club with loads of other people who love the original stories just as much as you. And the covers are just fabulous...

Just this afternoon I finished Austenland by Shannon Hale. I really enjoyed it. It was short but unique, and the writing style was quirky enough to appeal but not enough to distract. I currently have Me and Mr. Darcy (a Target Booksense Pick) on reserve at the library, and A Family Fortune in my TBR stack. I'm putting off Book 7 for this! But so far, so good.

I LOVE Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries - they are AMAZINGLY in-voice!

I've avoided the spinoffs b/c I tend to get obsessive...but I'm dying to read some!

Last night, my DH and I watched the 1940s version of Pride & Prejudice. Very enjoyable (though I like the remakes better).

I love Austin's stories, but haven't read any of these spinoffs. I'll have to check some of these out.

Like Christine, I've only read (and loved) the originals. I'm really angry that Anne Hathaway is going to be playing Jane in an upcoming movie. I can't stand her!

Beck, I've not yet read any of Stephanie Barron's books, but I very much enjoyed Carrie Bebris' Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery Series.

I think I need to watch the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice to see if I become smitten with Colin Firth myself.

Stacy...who would you have picked instead? Just curious.

Definitely watch the BBC version. I resisted for the longest time because my favorite was the Laurence Olivier/Greer Garson flick, completely wrong in every way, but IF LOVING IT WAS WRONG, I DIDN'T WANT TO BE RIGHT.

Now I love both, for different reasons. In fact, I just watched the BBC version this past weekend, when my husband and daughter were away and I had the house (and the DVD player) to myself. Mr. Collins is hysterical, but Jane will always be a wet dishrag to me. I have no use for perfect people. :-)
